What female writers do you wish people knew more a What female writers do you wish people knew more about? πŸ“š During Women's History Month, we have really loved getting to know some posthumously published and undiscovered female writers and their stories πŸ’– The publishing industry has historically excluded women's voices, especially those of women of colour, and so we dedicated a large part of our Herstory box to sharing the stories of such women πŸ’– One of these fascinating women was ZitkΓ‘la-Ε Γ‘ (pictured)πŸ“– She was a Yankton Dakota writer, editor, musician and political activist. Her most famous collection of stories, "American Indian Stories", explore the hardships she and other Native Americans faced when assimilative measures were enforced upon them πŸ“š As a journalist, some of the stories and articles are taken from pieces she wrote for Harper’s and Atlantic’s Monthly. As a talented musician, she is also attributed with writing the music for the first Native American opera, The Sun Dance Opera 🎡 ZitkΓ‘la-ŠÑ’s activism is recognised for leading to landmark changes in the legal rights, preservation of culture, health care and education for Native American communities, a legacy which lives on a century later πŸ’ͺ
