What is Books That Matter?
Books That Matter is the number one subscription box to empower and inspire. We choose important, thought- provoking literature to stimulate our readers, along with feminist and bookish gifts to go alongside them made by independent creatives. The books we choose are predominantly of female or nb authorship, and we love supporting feminist charities, organisations and causes.

Why should I trust your opinions of a book that matters?
Our team have extensively researched and hand-picked the most influential titles in historical and contemporary publishing. We have selected publishers which share our passions and ethos to provide quality books which meet our promise of empowering and inspiring our customers. We have also reached out to book clubs, independent book shops, book bloggers, libraries, universities, and many more places and institutions to research what titles people consider to be ‘books that matter’ and have compiled a long list of texts to include in the boxes as a direct result of this research.

Are your boxes ethical?
We work really hard to make sure our boxes are as ethical as can be. Our boxes, and outer packaging and made from recyclable materials and are all recyclable themselves. We only work with, and support, independent businesses and all of the treats inside our boxes are vegan. We’re always looking to improve our sustainability, so if have any recommendations, please feel free to reach out!
Can I refer a friend?
Yes you can! We have recently launched our first ever Refer a Friend scheme, so all you’ll need to do is email our team ([email protected]) with your friends full name and email address and they’ll get £5 off of their first Books That Matter Subscription box. Once their order has been placed you’ll then receive a £5 voucher code as a thank you to be redeemed on your next subscription!
Please note, you must be a previous subscriber and the codes can only be redeemed on our rolling/1/3/6/12 month subscriptions.
How It Works
What will I get in each box?
Every month’s delivery will provide you with:
– A unique keepsake box designed by an independent female surface pattern designer
– At least one book (we are aiming to include one work of well-known fiction alongside a small publication by an independent publisher)
– At least 3 gifts created and made by an independent female creative in support of her business (gifts will include pens, tote bags, keyrings, badges, patches, art prints, and much more)
What is the cut off point for each month?
Usually, our boxes for the following month are available on the 20th of the month previous from 10am. So, our February box will be available to purchase at 10am on the 20th of January and so on. If you order before 10am on the 20th of the month, then you’ll likely receive the same months box, unless we are sold out. When placing an order, our website will tell you which box you’ll be receiving first.
Do I need to sign for the delivery?
Our boxes are slightly too big for the typical post box, so you will need to accept the delivery. However, you won’t need to sign for it. Our boxes are posted with Hermes here in the UK, and you will be sent tracking code for your parcel upon dispatch, and get updates on your phone, too. Our International parcels are posted via Royal Mail or Hermes dependant on location.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we do! At the moment, we have a standard international postage cost to cover all tracked international postage.
The exact amount will be given at checkout depending on your location.
Please note, due to the global pandemic international orders are taking around 4-6 weeks to arrive with our customers.

Returns & Refunds
Do you offer returns?
We don’t , sorry, but we hope you love your box!

What is your refund policy?
Here are some handy things to remember when ordering a Books That Matter subscription:
– We do not offer refunds; if you receive an item which is damaged or your box is missing an item by chance, please email us, and we will organise for a replacement for you. If you receive something that isn’t to your taste, we hope you can gift it to someone who will enjoy it – every month is different, so there is something for everyone!
– If you have pre-paid for a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription, we cannot cancel months that have been paid for in advance and refund these.
– Keep a close eye on our social media, read our newsletters, and join our Books That Matter Reading Group on Facebook for theme announcements per month. This will give you a small indication of what to expect so you can get excited about your next box, and hopefully you’ll receive something you love!
– We cannot accept returns, regardless of whether the box has been opened/ used/ re-wrapped.
– If a box is not collected, or accepted by the customer, and therefore received back with our distribution centre, a refund will be provided minus the delivery costs.
How can I change my address?
You’ll need to email our team with your subscription number and new address, and we’ll be able to do this for you.
If you’re on a rolling subscripton, you will also need to update this in your account, as well as getting in touch with our team, but don’t worry! We’re here to guide you through the process.
How can I extend my subscription?
If you’re at the end of your subscription then you can renew as soon as the next months box is available to purchase. So, if your subscription finished with the February box, you’ll need to wait until the March box is available before renewing. We’ll also send you an email when it’s time to renew, so keep an eye on your inbox!
Do you offer any discounts for new subscribers?
Occasionally we will run promotional discounts across our social channels and our email marketing (yay!).
Please note, we cannot backdate discount codes on orders that were previously made and you must only use one discount code per order or Books That Matter reserves the right to cancel the order and refund the payment.
How can I order Books That Matter as a gift?
If you’d like to send a Books That Matter box, or subscription, straight to the recipient, simply make your selection of a 1, 3, 6 or 12 month subscription package and order in their name and address. The notification of purchase will go to your email address, and it will still be a surprise for them.

Do you ship internationally?
Yes! We ship to most European countries and shipping prices are calculated at checkout. If you can’t see your destination on the shipping list, it’s likely because we can’t offer shipping here right now. If you’re unsure, please do get in touch and we’d be happy to help!
Please note, we cannot ship outside of the UK/EU at the moment due to the unfortunate price inflation from the impacts of Brexit and the pandemic. We’re hoping to resume international shipping really soon so please do bear with us! We can’t wait to be reading with you again!
I can’t see my location on the list?
There are a very small amount of EU places we can’t ship to at the moment due to shipping restrictions so if you can’t see your location on the list, this’ll be why.

Will I have to pay any fees?
You, the customer, responsible for any duties and taxes incurred when the parcel crosses international bordrs.
What are the shipping times?
We advise allowing 2-6 weeks for shipping to Europe, We have updated these time frames to consider current pandemic delays.
Will I receive any tracking?
Customers in the EU will receive tracking information from their local courier.
